China is observing an outbreak of the Human Metapnuemovirus (HMPV) particularly in children under 14 years of age.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is respiratory tract of the pneumoviridae family causing mild infections similar to that caused by a common cold. The infection shows symptoms resembling the common cold, including, a cough, runny or blocked nose, sore throat, fever and wheezing. HMPV spreads through contact with an infected person like secretions from coughs, sneezes, or via touch close contact with someone with infection like shaking hands, hugging, touching a doorknob or a phone or a keyboard. The virus was first discovered in 2001 by scientist in Netherlands. India is closely monitoring the situation in China.
