Terminal 1 Shutdown Triggers Massive Operational Reshuffle, Sacrificing 265 Weekly Global Flights for Domestic Relief

Mumbai airport has asked 46 airlines to temporarily discontinue 265 weekly international flight services from October 25 to free up Terminal 2 for domestic flights during the redevelopment of Terminal 1. This drastic measure frees up capacity for millions of domestic passengers shifting from Terminal 1, which is shutting down completely for a multi-year reconstruction project. Airlines have until October 6 to decide which specific international flights they will surrender. This is due to a severe infrastructure capacity crunch at Mumbai airport caused by the complete shutdown of Terminal 1 for redevelopment. To accommodate millions of displaced domestic passengers at Terminal 2, the airport operator is forcing airlines to sacrifice 265 weekly international flights, triggering major schedule disruptions and economic losses. The proposed redevelopment of Terminal 1 promises long-term modernization, the immediate shift may create an operational crisis at Terminal 2. Ultimately, airlines face sudden revenue losses and major scheduling disruptions, while international passengers will contend with reduced flight options, potential route cancellations, and higher airfares to travel to and from Mumbai.
